Sensor chip SIA

Sensor chip for Surface Interaction Analysis in Material Science. Synthetic polymers are increasingly used for biomedical purposes such as implants or adhesives. Evaluation of the biocompatibility of these polymers is essential in medical applications.

Sensor chip SIA allows the study of interactions between various body fluids and synthetic polymers, providing valuable information on the possible short and long term effects of contact between the polymers and the human body.

Typically, a spin-coating technique is used to layer a water insoluble polymer onto the sensor surface. Sample solutions that contain proteins selected to mimic body fluids, such as albumin or fibrinogen, are injected over the sensor surface and the interactions monitored. Conversely, proteins can be coated onto the sensor surface and water soluble polymers injected.

Designed to allow the use of the harsh chemicals often encountered in material science, Sensor chip SIA opens an entirely new application area for BIACORE systems.
